Further Advice & Guidance

Health and Safety on Educational Visits

Advice on organising educational visits can be found in the Teachernet website.   The relevant page and documents are linked from here.

The main document is the 1998 good practice guide Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits (HASPEV).

A four-part supplement to HASPEV was produced in 2002:

Standards for LEAs in Overseeing Educational Visits sets out good practice for local education authorities in overseeing educational visits carried out by schools. Schools, youth services and others may find the principles set out here useful too.

Standards for Adventure is aimed at the teacher or youth worker who leads young people on adventure activities.

A Handbook for Group Leaders is aimed at anyone who leads groups of young people on any kind of educational visit. It sets out good practice in supervision, ongoing risk assessment and emergency procedures.

Group Safety at Water Margins is aimed at anyone who organises learning activities that take place near or in water, such as a walk along a river bank or seashore, collecting samples from ponds or streams, or paddling or walking in gentle, shallow water.

Schools in Scotland can also access similar information from here.

Learning Outside the Classroom

An extensive source of web-based resources to help all forms of LOtC is being is compiled at the Learning Outside the Classroom website. The Manifesto for Learning Outside the Classroom partnership has created this resource with the help of many experts and practitioners in learning outside the classroom. The resource is designed to help professionals working with young people aged 0–19 to provide high-quality experiences.
